Originally the site of a Roman fort, Pevensey was William the Conqueror's landing point in England, became the site for a medieval castle and a landing spot for 18th century smugglers. Today Pevensey Bay has a large shingle beach in front of salt marshes know as the Pevensey Levels; a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
